What is ALE?
Many homeowner and renter policies include additional living expense coverage, sometimes called ALE or loss of use. After a covered loss it can help pay for temporary housing and some extra costs while your home is unlivable. What your policy covers, for how long and up to what limit depends on your policy and your adjuster. We can't tell you what your insurer will approve, and we don't guarantee payment.
What to send us
None of this is required to send a request, but having it ready speeds things up:
- Your claim number
- Your adjuster's name, phone and email
- The daily or monthly housing amount your insurer has approved, if you have one
- The date you had to leave and when repairs are expected to finish
- Who is staying: adults, children and pets
- What matters most: distance to school or work, parking, a place to work
If your insurer or a placement company is coordinating the stay, give us their contact and we'll work with them.
Common questions
Can you bill my insurance company?
We can invoice an insurer or placement company once they approve the stay in writing. Otherwise you pay and submit our receipts.
How soon can we move in?
It depends on which homes are open and your dates. Mark your request urgent and a local person will confirm what can work, within one business day.
What if repairs finish early?
Your agreement states the notice needed to leave early, in writing, before you pay anything.
We have pets. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily. Pet terms vary by home. Mention your pets in your request and we'll tell you which homes fit.
Do you have homes with more than one bedroom?
Yes, including whole houses with several bedrooms in Detroit and two- and three-bedroom units in Warren. Tell us your household size and we'll check what fits.
